SLIPKNOT's CRAHAN On Side Project: 'My Most Magical Musical Experience'
July 22, 2003SLIPKNOT percussionist Shawn Crahan (a.k.a. The Clown) recently spoke to Launch about TO MY SURPRISE, his "mysterious" side band which he has been working on for the past year and a half during time off from SLIPKNOT.
TO MY SURPRISE's self-titled debut was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, P.O.D., SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, BEASTIE BOYS, SMASHING PUMPKINS),and is due on October 7 through Roadrunner Records.
Unlike SLIPKNOT, TO MY SURPRISE do not use costumes or masks, and their music reportedly sounds nothing like SLIPKNOT or other SLIPKNOT offshoot projects STONE SOUR and MURDERDOLLS.
Crahan recalled there was a moment in the studio when he knew TO MY SURPRISE was something special:
"You know, [TO MY SURPRISE guitarist/vocalist] Brandon [Garner] and I went up and we wrote this song called 'The World's Too Small', and it was the most magical musical experience I've ever been able to participate in. For the simple fact that I was giving more than on just one or two simple ideas. I was playing drums, I was singing, I was contributing guitar loops, everything."
TO MY SURPRISE have no plans to tour right now, because Crahan is going back into the studio in Des Moines with SLIPKNOT this week.
